Hi, I'm Yu-Mei.

I live and write in Singapore, where I've spent most of my life except for the four years I spent getting an undergraduate education at Northwestern University in the United States. I write about history, travel, food, culture and the arts, which means I'm often interviewing people, poring over old documents or roving through the streets, looking for something good to eat or write about.

With Mark Ravinder Frost, I'm the co-author of Singapore: A Biography, a popular history book about Singapore. It was released in Singapore in October 2009 and is available in Singapore, the US (via Amazon), the UK (via Amazon), Australia, Hong Kong and China. I'm also one of the authors of Lonely Planet Vietnam (10th edition) and Lonely Planet Korea (8th edition).

Other publications and organisations I've written for include Hemispheres (the inflight magazine of United Airlines), The Peak, Appetite, the National Museum of Singapore and the National Heritage Board in Singapore. Among other projects, I'm presently co-editor for a new volume of academic essays on women, gender and sexuality in Singapore and Malaysia. In September 2010, I will be moving to London to pursue the MA in Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Since August 2001 I've had a personal blog, where I write about Singapore, writing, food, travel and other miscellany. I've also had professional blogging and website editor gigs at Popgadget, Singapore Metblogs, Yesterday.sg, Sinema and Schoolbag.

For the latest on what I'm up to, read my blog or follow me on Twitter.
